mastering the italian tubular cast-on

Well, it took me about 40 tries, but I think I’ve finally mastered the Italian Tubular Cast-On, although I broke a knitting needle in the attempts. I do like the effect it created. I used this cast-on Endpaper Knits. I was given the yarn for the Knit Mitt Kit Swap. I’ve got a Lorna’s Laces in navy blue and Mountain Colors Bearfoot Winter Sky (which is gorgeous). I wanted to use the Mountain Colors as the background color and the navy as the main color, but it’s making the navy fade into the background. Also the navy is so so close to what’s in the yarn. Of course, this could be because of using the the mountain colors as the dominant color (see yarn dominance). So I’m either going to reverse the two, or change the main color to black. Unfortunately it’s not photographing very well. I’ll try again after I’ve got a bigger swatch of the different combinations. I’d love suggestions for a different main color also. Plum, teal, navy and bright blue are out. I’m thinking aqua might be a weird way to go, but that it would work. So might grey.
