feeling blue

Remember that Claudia’s handpaint that I bought at Stash in Berkeley over Thanksgiving? Well, I tried to knit a sock with it over the weekend while I was at the conference and learned a few things.

1) It self-stripes.
2) Self-striping yarn does not look great in a vertical eyelet rib pattern. I’d been using a free pattern from the Loopy Ewe.
2) The dye wasn’t set. I had blue tipped fingers (either from the brown or the blue I couldn’t tell) and a blue line where the yarn was wrapped around my right index finger.

So, I’d appreciate any tips on setting the dye before I go any further. It’s quite pretty yarn and I really would like to use it some day.

  • Yeah, a warm bath in vinegar should do it. If it is superwash, you could stick it in the microwave in a bit of vinegar and a lot of water (in a non-food bowl) and not worry about it felting…. If the colors are really dark already, there might just be too much dye. but try the vinegar first fo sho.

  • You could try some lukewarm water & a little vinegar, perhaps?

    ‘S lovely stuff!

  • 3rd on the vinegar. This will usually do it. Then, find a sock pattern that can break up the striping or something? Crusoe maybe? Good luck!
