a noro striped scarf

About a year ago, I was bemoaning the loss of my Multi-Directional Kureyon Scarf, a pattern by Karen Baumer, which I’m pretty sure my Mom sent. It also makes up a spiffy looking afghan, if you like sewing. And so I went about finding the yarn for the new ‘IT’ Noro Scarf, the Noro Striped Scarf. The scarf, written in a 1×1 rib (Brooklyn Tweed’s version rather than Hello Yarn’s Kureyon Scarf 2×2 rib)  is wonderfully simple and should have been a quick knit.

The first problem for me was identifying two balls of Noro (Silk Garden in my case) that were sufficiently contrasting enough to make a nice scarf. Initially I picked out one with some very lovely muted beiges that I thought would present a nice contrast to some of the brights you see in Noro. Unfortunately the second skein I picked also contained some of those neutrals and I ended up with Taupe on Taupe. Not all that interesting to me.

I think this is the yarn I didn't use.

I can find these colors in the scarf.

A couple more months went by and I picked up another ball of Silk Garden and tried again. This time I got some odd green on greens. I picked up yet another ball of Silk Garden and got something I kind of liked.  By now though, all hope of identifying the color numbers I chose had disappeared and I made the sign of the cross and hoped to get through a full scarf. My scarf is narrower than Brooklyn Tweed’s at only 31 stitches instead of 39.

So then I got a foot or so done in February 2009 and put it up on Ravelry. I occasionally picked it up and worked on it. I know this because when I picked it up in late October or early November it appeared to be nearly done. So maybe the knitting on it was nearly painless and invisible. But it definitely wasn’t a quick knit.

But it’s done and now I can’t complain any more that I don’t know where the US Size 7 Circular needles went. This means I’m clear for Seneca, another Brooklyn Tweed pattern, coincidentally enough.

Pattern: Noro Striped Scarf by Brooklyn Tweed * Yarn: Noro Silk Garden 2 Skeins, colors unknown (most likely 249 and 292) * Needles: US Size 7 * Mods: Cast-on 31 instead of 39 stitches * What I would do differently: cable cast on, use Size 6 instead of Size 7 needles * Yarn Shops Used: Black Sheep, Loop, Abundant Yarn and Dyeworks (back when I thought I’d Kuryeon multi-directional scarf replacement)

Bottom line: If I had to knit one of these two scarves again, I’d pick the multi-directional. I prefer a more structured stitch over all and I think this scarf is a little loose for me.
