earth day in portland

In 2008, blogging, events on April 20, 2008 at 8:33 pm

I have it stuck in my head that Earth Day is April 22nd, but that events take place on Sunday. And I can’t follow directions. I read them and reread them and just when I think I’ve stopped misreading them, the inevitable happens.

So when Blue Moon Fiber Arts posted about the Inexplicable Knitting Behavior scavenger hunt, I had to remind myself several times that I had to do the scavenger hunt on Saturday. I probably wasn’t going to be able to make it to see Stephanie Pearl McPhee, aka the Yarn Harlot, on Tuesday. I had it in my head to go Saturday and run into other knitters even though I couldn’t go get ‘credit.’ It turned out my husband wasn’t available Saturday.

And then I realized that I was going to go and hell I’d do the scavenger hunt on Sunday, when my husband was available. This was going to be fun for both of us since as Salemites (but frequent visitors to Portland), we hadn’t seen most of these things. Somehow, Sunday became April 19th and my husband and I went off to PDX to go scavenger hunting and I forgot which days of the week were what dates. The hallmark of ADHD is poor short-term memory. Or at least that’s what it looks like. You can be brilliant at thinking your way through a problem, but then forget three minutes later what you did.

My first planned stop was the Blue Moon Tavern, which also happens to be a McMenamin’s pub. Three potential points. I got the shot outside and then convinced the bartender to pour a local brew and pose with the sock under their chalkboard that says Blue Moon Tavern on it. Not bad, eh? I don’t know the bartender either so that was a bonus point. Four points.

Then we decided to stop at Ken’s Artisan’s Bakery, which is just up the street on 21st. We’re fans of the bread, having had it at Navarre. Josh wanted some coffee. Lo and behold, they serve Stumptown Coffee. So another potential two points. I don’t think the bird in the picture is the Stumptown Rooster, since it’s just a bird, but I think I finally solved the mystery of the origin of the name for the Rooster Rock color way. On the way in, I read the directions out loud to Josh and he says, “Steph, it’s the 20th”. Read the rest of this entry »

up and down

In 2008, competitions, finished 2008, knitting, sock madness, sock yarn on March 19, 2008 at 4:12 pm

On the downside, I’m home sick. I hate having a sore throat. I think tomorrow I’m just going to take whatever sudafed crud I can find (I’m NOT supposed to take this stuff for a variety of reasons) and go back to work. I’m movied out, bored and probably just have another sinus infection. Of course, my doctor is located near my job anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

maw of the zombie

In competitions, knitting, sock madness on March 15, 2008 at 12:09 pm

I finished the heel flap of my Zombie Sock for Sock Madness 2 last night and now am staring directly into the maw of the foot.

These are surfer zombies by the way. As in, “Dude, I’m totally dead.”

hypnosis

In 2008, competitions, knitting, sock madness, socks on March 13, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I’m finding the Zombie pattern that I’m knitting as part of Sock Madness completely hypnotic. I guess the zombie state that one gets into after knitting for several hours straight is a lot like being hypnotized. Or maybe it’s the yarn. Or how it looks in this pattern. Of course my socks look more like rippling waves than a zombie, unless the zombie is pretty fresh and just bruised. I tinked out 8 rows, so I feel that way myself. Maybe the pattern will turn me into a knitting zombie.

After 3 1/2 hrs of knitting and tinking, I just finished pattern repeat #2, row 8. More tomorrow night after work most likely. Though maybe tomorrow lunch will be one of those longer lunch breaks. Good thing I’m being sent home early on a delivery mission!

mad knitting

In 2008, competitions, knitting, knitting shops, oregon, sock madness, sock yarn, socks on March 13, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Yep, Sock Madness started this afternoon. So I’m knitting as much as I can in between work and commuting home, which means I’ve done all of 7 rows of ribbing. Here’s a pic.

The yarn is Blue Brick Wall by Blue Moon Fiber Arts. My husband bought it for me this weekend at Twisted. That makes two shops in Oregon (other than the company itself and for that you have to place an online order) that I know of that carry Blue Moon. The other is the Farmhouse Knit Shop, which is in a Portland suburb (Beaverton). So I guess Twisted can claim that they are the only shop in Portland that carries Blue Moon. Regardless, they have a lot of it in right now and they’ve had it in for two weeks. I can only imagine what they must have gotten initially.

I know I owe you posts. They are coming :) . Now back to knitting those socks! I really want to make it out of Round 1 again this year and I musn’t let the fact that the new Knitty is up distract me. Nor that I want to tell you that I got into the 3-month version of Scout’s Swag Sock Club, which will start in October.

toe-up sock

In socks on November 28, 2007 at 2:30 pm

I spent Thanksgiving with Josh and our friend Mike in San Francisco. We did a lot of fun things with knitters, which will have to wait until I have some more free time. One thing that I did over the weekend is finish one of my toe-up socks. The yarn is Rare Gems, an overdye by Blue Moon Fiber Arts. I picked it up at a considerable discount during Oregon Flock and Fiber.

Let me leave you a picture of my new bag. My purse disappeared (along with all my keys and favorite key chains) a few weeks ago. This is the replacement. I used our REI dividend to pay for the California State Tax. With gas prices what they are, it would have cost too much to wait and see if they had the right bag at the REI here in Oregon.

Blue Moon Fiber Arts is holding an on-site destashing sale in Scapoose, OR on November 10th at 10AM. Apparently they’ve run out of room.

Checkbook be still!
